Winners and losers: The results from Round 14 and who it says more about

2023-06-19T11:20+10:00

Who does it say more about?

The results of Round 14 can say plenty, whether it be about the winners or the losers.

SEN Breakfast’s Kane Cornes and Garry Lyon went through each of the completed games and discussed which team the result speaks volumes about more.

Port Adelaide (110) - (72) Carlton

Cornes: “It says more about Port Adelaide.

“I mean, the seven goals in a row that they kicked was devastating.

“They’re playing the best footy of any team in the league right now.

“Are they the best team in it? No, but I'm slowly coming around to the fact that they are a shot to win it all this year.

“I’ve slowly come around to that.”

Brisbane (97) - (81) Sydney

Lyon:Sydney for mine, they are a grand final team who are going to miss out on finals the following year.

“They are a mere shadow of the team that sort of charged through to September and into the Grand Final.

“We know some of the reasons why, but there are some of the other reasons which would be unacceptable to Sydney Swans supporters.

“Brisbane got it done and got it done really well, but I think that speaks volumes about the Swans.”

GWS (106) - (36) Fremantle

Cornes: “The Dockers for me, it was an insipid performance really.

“The effort just wasn't there, they couldn't score.

“The numbers were extraordinary, -24 in contested possessions, -24 in inside 50s, they were out tackled as well and conceded something like 80 points off turnovers.

“So there's something seriously wrong going on at Fremantle unfortunately.

“They were a team that we thought a pass mark would probably be to play in a Prelim Final this year after winning a final last year.”

Richmond (90) - (70) St Kilda

Lyon: “I think it says more about Richmond.

“I think St Kilda are what St Kilda are, and they've been super competitive under Ross, they're eight wins and five losses.

“I think they're squeezing as much as they can out of themselves, they've been very hard to score against and Richmond have come out and had 10 scoring shots in the first quarter and ended up kicking 13.12

“I think Andrew McQualter has got them reenergised and I think he's got them interested again.

“How far that takes him is going to be problematic because they've had a slow start to the year.

“But I like what they're doing, I like the fact that he's put his own little stamp on it, he swung a few changes around and I think it speaks volumes of them and him.

“It's a good result.”

Carlton (120) - (61) Gold Coast

Cornes: “I’ll go the positive with the Blues, when their good players play well, it says a lot, it speaks volumes.

“When (Adam) Cerra plays well, when (Patrick) Cripps and when (Sam) Walsh play well (they are strong).

“I thought (Mitch) McGovern was magnificent and McKay and Curnow did what they needed to do.

“When their highly paid, highly touted, highly skilful players play well, they're a tough proposition and we saw that.”

North Melbourne (84) - (105) Western Bulldogs

Lyon: “I learned more about North Melbourne and where they've developed as a team because they were legitimately in this contest all day.

“Yeah, Cody Weightman kicked six goals, which is a fantastic performance, but they were competitive through the middle of the ground.

“I think they're developing North Melbourne.

“If you're a fan of North Melbourne, then I think you're pretty pleased with where they're starting to head and this is nothing bad about the Bulldogs.

“They've still got the same issues, but I didn't sort of learn that much about them.”
