Winners and losers: The results from Round 15 and who it says more about

2023-06-27T10:30+10:00

Who does it say more about?

The results of Round 15 can say plenty, whether it be about the winners or the losers.

SEN Breakfast’s Kane Cornes and Nathan Buckley went through each of the games and discussed which team the result speaks volumes about.

Geelong (78) - (63) Melbourne

Buckley:Geelong’s performance over Melbourne, in particular the last quarter when they slammed on six goals in a row to take the game out of Melbourne’s grasp.

“Melbourne had it, but Geelong were able to arrest that momentum and take it, so I think it says more about Geelong.

“Melbourne are bouncing around. They’re a top-four side but they’re bouncing around and they’re showing differences in their best and worst.

“That Geelong side, on their home deck, they did enough and they’re just showing signs. The next month will say a little bit about it.

“Cats fans would be very happy with that win.”

St Kilda (56) - (84) Brisbane

Cornes: “Probably the Saints for me.

“Are they any better this year than where they were this time last year? I would think not.

“Same record, similar percentage, same playing list, same issues with their game plan, in particular the way that they move the football and the boring style in which they play.

“A lot of optimism about the start and Ross Lyon and the impact he would have, but largely they’re in the exact same position as what they were this time last year.

“I’m not convinced the Saints are any better and have solved any of their issues that were there under Brett Ratten.”

Sydney (205) - (34) West Coast

Buckley: “In the end it says more about West Coast and how dire their situation is.

“The question I’ve got around Sydney is: Is this a circuit-breaker? Because they beat no one, a team that was uncompetitive.

“Will the Swans be on their tucker? After that result, have we fed the beast enough for Sydney to make a late charge?”

Fremantle (93) - (61) Essendon

Cornes: “It said more about Freo, but I don’t want to get too carried away.

“It felt like a response-based performance on the back of that GWS mauling.

“There was a lot to like about what they did, in particular the hunger of the midfield. Four centre bounce goals, Caleb Serong was just enormous, Andrew Brayshaw is getting back to his best and the combination of Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy worked as best as I’ve seen it work this year.

“They gave their forwards a look and Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Jackson were the beneficiaries of that.

“I thought they were really effective with their style.”

Collingwood (82) - (80) Adelaide

Buckley: “I think it says more about Adelaide.

“That was a brilliant game.”

“I think what they’ve been building is excellent”: Why Buckley is a fan of the Crows

Gold Coast (101) - (34) Hawthorn

Cornes: “I expected Gold Coast to win, they did win.

“Did I learn anything about them? Probably not.

“The play Collingwood this week which is a good test.”

Buckley: “They’re meeting expectations, Gold Coast, but they need to rise above that.

“That was a good, solid performance on their home deck. They made it hard for the opposition to move the ball, so that was a really good defensive effort.

“There’s going to be greater challenges and tests for them.”
