“Destiny in their hands”: Lions great sends premiership warning

2023-06-29T10:15+10:00

Brisbane great Jason Akermanis is very bullish about his former club’s premiership credentials this year.

Currently sitting third on the ladder, the Lions have put themselves in a great position to lock down a top four spot and therefore banking an all-important home final come September.

Despite playing finals the last four years, Akermanis says this year is Brisbane’s best chance of winning the flag.

“The Lions are in the top couple of teams in the competition,” Akermanis told SENQ Breakfast with Pat and Heals.

“This is a great chance for them to go deep into September and get in a Grand Final and win one, they’re that good.

“You look at those top four team and the Lions are definitely in that mix, where it all finishes, we don’t know but they’ve still got destiny in their hands and that’s what we love.”

The Lions currently boast a perfect record at the Gabba this year, winning all six of their games in convincing fashion.

Should the Lions bank a home final, Akermanis says a team would have to play out of their skin to beat Chris Fagan’s side.

“The Lions are pretty much impossible to tip against at home,” he added.

“For anyone that comes up here, you’re going to have to play an amazing game to beat the Lions, they’re just a different team at home.

“When they play away from home, they’ve been a little bit off but their just too hard to beat, they’ve got so much depth and I know that anyone that throws anything at them, they’ll be able to match them.

“They should be too strong.”

The Lions will host Richmond on Thursday night at the Gabba in an elimination final rematch from last year.

The Lions were victors by two points on that occasion.
