Is Damien Hardwick really the man to save the Suns?

2023-07-05T13:59+10:00

So, another coach is about to come and go on the Gold Coast.

Caroline Wilson explosively revealed on Footy Classified - that Stuart Dew is facing the axe and that it will most likely happen within weeks and maybe sooner if the Suns suffer another humiliating defeat to Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

Dew could feel hard done by, firstly, because you get the feeling that Caro had more information about the club's concerns over his coaching than he does.

I'm sure most of the revelations were news to him - can you imagine how awkward it was for him to walk into training today and address the team? And even worse, the burden of trying to coach this weekend, knowing the club has made up its mind.

Gold Coast blames Dew for various issues, including inadequate preparation and game-day strategy. However, the biggest problem is the threat of losing more young stars, such as Ben King, Jack Lukosius, Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson, walking out the door if they don't see success on the horizon.

Those making the brutal call on his future should ask themselves how much blame for the club's predicament rests on them.

I know for sure Dew wasn't the one offering underperforming players exorbitant contracts. He didn't trade the Andrew Brayshaw pick for Lachie Weller, and he certainly didn't create the salary cap calamity, which resulted in the club giving away critical assets like they were handing out lollies to kids on Halloween.

It's clear now that former Richmond coach and Dew's 2004 premiership team-mate Damien Hardwick revealing last week that he's ready to coach again has fast-tracked the Suns’ decision-making.

Hardwick, no doubt, will be offered a gigantic five-year contract without going through a hiring process and will be sold as the saviour and the one to finally take Gold Coast to September glory; how predictable. How risky.

This job is for a coach willing to get their hands dirty, with infectious energy, and an inspiring work ethic, one who doesn't want to take extra leave in January, and has a modern game style.

It's not a job for a coach who was exhausted and burnt out just four weeks ago and walked away from a long-term contract just 9 weeks into the season after just recently trading away the Tigers future draft picks.

It makes sense for the Suns to pick up the phone and sound out Hardwick. However, you want to be certain he's doing it for the right reasons, not for his superannuation balance.
