“I haven’t got a plan”: Fittler’s surprising admission on Gutherson’s bench role

2023-07-09T15:57+10:00

NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler has openly stated that he doesn’t have a clear plan for Parramatta Eels star Clint Gutherson as he takes up the final bench spot for his side in State of Origin Game III.

In a game that is all about NSW restoring pride in the 2023 series, Fittler opted for seven changes to a losing side in Game II which was headlined by recalls to Gutherson and Cody Walker.

With his coaching career seemingly on the line, Fittler’s changes came as a surprise to many as Queensland contingency throughout the series continues to see them hold the upper hand.

The versatile fullback can slot into any position through the backline and with NSW suffering two injuries in those positions in the first two games, Gutherson will likely play an understudy role in case of another setback in Game III.

“Well, to be fair, I haven’t got a plan (for Gutherson),” Fittler told SEN 1170 The Run Home.

“When you’re picking that last position and we had two hookers… given our luck in the first two games from the point of view from some of our injuries, they’ve been in the outside backs.

“In nearly most games, we’ve had an injury in the outside backs, so Gutho covers anywhere from five-eighth to fullback but there’s no plan (for him).”

Fittler admitted Gutherson’s energy in camp and on the training field has been contagious and a big benefit to the squad leading up to the series finale.

“What I do love, I love what he’s about, he’s full of energy, whether you’re having breakfast, whether you’re doing fitness drills or playing in a game, he’s always contributing,” Fittler added.

“He’s good fun to have around, watch what he does Paramatta every single week, he’s just wholehearted.

“I love rewarding players like that.”

Gutherson has been named in the 17 jersey but will likely see limited game time barring a serious injury in the backline.

NSW will look to stop Queensland from completing a series whitewash in Sydney next Wednesday, with all the action live on SEN from 7pm.
