Sam Edmund's contract and trade update on seven Blues

2023-07-10T18:49+10:00

SEN chief sports reporter Sam Edmund has the latest on several Blues’ contract talks.

Carlton has largely disappointed in a year where it was expected to play finals, although recent form has renewed optimism around Michael Voss’ side.

But it also looks set to be a busy off-season for the Blues. Edmund has the latest on numerous players, including Zac Fisher, Jack Silvagni, Tom De Koning and more.

See the details below

Zac Fisher

“Zac Fisher, I don’t think he’ll be at Carlton next year, in fact I’d be surprised if he was and that’s with two years to run on a contract,” Edmund began on SEN’s Sportsday.

“He appears to be on the outer down there and can't get a look in. He’s got a hamstring (injury) right at the moment, he’s played once since Round 7.”

Mitch McGovern

“Mitch McGovern can’t get the Blues to the table at the moment to discuss a new contract. There are some superior players, I think, without disrespecting Mitch, out on the open market in that position right now in Ben McKay, Harry Himmelberg, Mason Redman, even Esava Ratugolea and Tom Barras has signed long term but there’s some smoke around him.

“So perhaps Carlton doesn’t have to rush in. Nevertheless, nothing there yet.”

Jack Silvagni

“No offer at this point for Jack Silvagni, but his last couple of weeks have been important.

“Jack’s happy at Carlton, just wants to play consistently, ideally in a set position

“But my understanding is no fresh signature imminent there at this stage.”

Paddy Dow & Lachie Plowman

“Paddy Dow will be elsewhere, Lachie Plowman will depart it sounds like.”

Caleb Marchbank

“Caleb Marchbank is playing for a new deal and by all reports was good in the VFL on the weekend and looms as McGovern’s replacement if he can’t recover from that corked quad.”

Tom De Koning

“And then there’s Tom De Koning, the big elephant in the room and ongoing at the moment, they continue to brace for a decision on that.

“There’s still no change, St Kilda and Sydney right at the front of the queue, Geelong doing what they always do and they’re competitive in the pursuit, as always, on their terms or not at all.

“The brother and the family moving down there is the huge lure. All four options are really open at this stage.”
