The Round 17 performances that flew under the radar according to Champion Data

2023-07-12T13:59+10:00

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne joined SEN’s Sportsday to discuss the five performances from Round 17 which may have been overlooked in the coaches’ votes.

Hoyne used Champion Data’s rating system, which values impact above volume and punishes mistakes, to find under-the-radar performances from players.

See his five performances from players over the weekend below:

Dion Prestia (Richmond)

“We’ve got Dion Prestia here.

“He didn't get a vote from the coaches, and we had him as the fifth-highest rated player on the ground.

“It was actually his second-highest rated game for the season.

“He had 22 disposals and his ball use, which is probably sort of not often a real strength area of his game, was his best of the season.

“He was playing a slightly different role on Friday.”

Jordan De Goey (Collingwood)

“I feel like I feel like I've mentioned this guy a bit this year, but Jordan De Goey didn’t get a vote (against the Bulldogs).

“Only Nick Daicos came out as a higher-rated player on the ground.

“We talk about damaging mids, he had 23 disposals, eight score involvements and a goal.

“34-35 per cent of his chains result in a score this year, which is the highest return of any midfielder in the competition.

“That was on display against the Dogs.”

Will Ashcroft (Brisbane)

“His performance on the weekend, he was the highest-rated player on the ground (against West Coast).

“That was his best return for the year for his ball use on the weekend.

“There was no better ball user, of any midfielder from the round.

“He got two votes from the coaches, but we had him as the highest-rated player.

Jack Buckley (GWS)

“One Giants defender got a lot of love this week and fair enough in Sam Taylor.

“His performance again was fantastic, but his partner in crime Jack Buckley, didn't get a vote from the coaches.

“We had him as the third-highest rated player on the ground against Hawthorn.

“He was the fourth-highest rated key defender for the round.

“He has been involved in nine more one-on-one contests than any defender in the competition and he's performing exceptionally well too.”

Jack Steele (St Kilda)

“He only got one vote from the coaches, but we had him as the highest-rated player (against Melbourne).

“His ball winning ability against Melbourne was fantastic, but his pressure was back.

“It was the highest rated pressure game of his season and 12 tackles, which is what you associate Jack Steele with.”
