McKay to miss up to two months with star Blues midfielder also under an injury cloud

2023-07-17T17:40+10:00

Harry McKay will undergo an operation on his right knee and won’t play again in the 2023 home and away season.

The Blues spearhead was subbed out of his side’s win over Port Adelaide with an apparent serious knee injury. While he’s avoided ACL damage, he’ll undergo an arthroscope on his knee this week.

“While it is disappointing for Harry that he will be sidelined, we know he will be the ultimate professional and continue to have a positive influence around the Club during this period of the season,” Carlton Head of Football Brad Lloyd said in a statement.

“One of the main things the playing group prides itself on is stepping up and everyone playing their role when needed. That opportunity will present again in Harry’s absence.

“We’ll continue to lean on our even contribution across the board as we lock in for this Saturday’s game against West Coast.”

The Blues expect McKay to return in six to eight weeks, meaning he won’t play before the finals and may not even then, should Carlton make it that far.

McKay had kicked 12 goals in the five games leading into Round 18, reestablishing the form that has him among the most dangerous forward in the competition.

Meanwhile, there are more injury woes at Ikon Park in the form of Adam Cerra.

The Blues say their star midfielder is a test to play this week against West Coast with hamstring tightness, while Matt Owies also has a 1-2 week calf injury.

Cerra played just 66 per cent of the win over Port Adelaide, finishing with 17 touches. He's averaged 28 touches and over six clearances a game in the last month leading into Round 18.
