“That was an awful watch”: North great pleads with Kangaroos to break the shackles

2023-07-17T11:59+10:00

David King has pleaded with North Melbourne to play a more attacking style of footy, rather than playing dour on top of poor losses.

The Roos only scored 40 points in their eight-goal loss to fellow bottom four side Hawthorn on Sunday and only had 10 shots on goal.

“That was an awful watch. It was just bad, it was awful,” King told SEN’s Whateley.

“I know you can be a bad footy team and play poorly on occasion, but that was a real spiritless performance and it’s hard to see the fans that keep fronting up and they’re walking away clutching onto small wins – what are the small wins yesterday?

“I don’t know what the plan was yesterday. They avoided the corridor. I’m thinking, if you’re going to lose, play with some bravery and see if you can score.

“I’d go and watch them lose by 80 points every week if you just see something. You see Harry Sheezel get another 30 touches, but there’s never really a lot of damage to them … they’re coaching the brilliance out of them.

“It’s a club on hold. It’s frustrating. It’s getting to the point of annoying for the fans. You’ve just got to free it up. Ratts (Brett Ratten), if you lose by 100 points so be it. This is another wasted year.

“It would want to be bloody good when it gets rolling if we’re going through all of this.

“That’s where it sits. I’m proud of the fans for turning up and you don’t want them to rally against the club, but you’ve got to see more than that.

“I plead with Ratts to free them up and just let them play. You lose by 48, 62 and 66 the last three weeks – does it really matter if its 100?

“There’s no point going there and watching them kick six goals and the week before nine goals. You just need to see something.”

It remains unclear when Alastair Clarkson will return to the helm, with general manager of football Todd Viney ruling him out coaching this coming weekend.

The 17th-placed Roos meet sixth-placed St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Sunday evening.
