The statistic that Geelong must improve to make premiership push

2023-07-19T14:55+10:00

Geelong has roared back into form in the last fortnight with consecutive big wins over North Melbourne and Essendon at GMHBA Stadium.

With both of those victories coming by more than 10 goals, the Cats have jumped into fifth position with a 9-1-7 record and a percentage of 122.9.

While that percentage is the fourth highest in the competition, it doesn’t tell the full story according to Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne.

Hoyne revealed that Geelong’s percentage at home is what’s boosting that figure so much as it comes in at a whopping 174.

While they’ve been dominant at home, their percentage is just 100 when not playing at GMHBA Stadium, putting them among the middle of the pack.

Hoyne says this statistic is why he’s not jumping on the Geelong bandwagon just yet.

“The only reason I'm holding (on Geelong) at the moment, and I'm not being stubborn, is what they've actually done outside of GMHBA this year,” Hoyne told SEN Sportsday.

“They've belted up on teams, other than the Giants this year, down at Geelong this year.

“They have a percentage of 174 down at Geelong, which is what they did last year, it’s exactly the same.

“But last year when they left Geelong, they still had a percentage of 135. So, they belted up again on teams outside of Geelong.

“This year, that’s only at 100 per cent when they've left GMHBA Stadium.”

With crucial games against Brisbane and Collingwood away from GMHBA Stadium in the next month, Hoyne is keen to see if the Cats can turn around their form at other venues which will give them an improved profile heading into September.

“I’m still sitting there going, ‘Okay, let’s see how it goes against Brisbane at the Gabba’,” Hoyne said.

“I don't think that they're going to beat Brisbane at the Gabba.

“I think that's probably the hardest trip in footy, they don't need to beat Brisbane at the Gabba.

“But we have just got to see whether or not this defensive mechanism is in place against probably the best offensive juggernaut in the competition.

“That (when they improve away) is when I will start to change, but I’m not just jumping on now.”

Geelong’s big challenge against Brisbane at the Gabba is set for 4:35pm (AEST) on Saturday.
