Buckley brands GWS captain Greene the “best big moment player” in the AFL

GWS captain Toby Greene might be the AFL’s most in-form player.

The Giants now sit sixth following seven-straight wins and Greene has been the figure most influential in that streak.

The superstar was huge in his side’s come-from-behind win against the Bulldogs in Ballarat on Saturday, kicking five goals while picking up 19 disposals and 10 score involvements.

With Greene sitting fourth in the Coleman Medal race on 49 goals, AFL great Nathan Buckley named the small forward the “best big moment player in the competition”.

“Toby Greene, he kicked 5.2 (against the Bulldogs) and has 49 goals for the year,” Buckley said on SEN Breakfast.

“He is the best big moment player in the competition.

“When he kicked his fifth on the weekend to be able to steal that win against the Bulldogs, I’m sure the Giants fans were loving it.

“What an inspired choice and an inspiring captain this bloke is.

“The thing I love about him is he’s never beaten. He’s a massive competitor.

“He has a physical streak in him that you don't often see in some forwards. He's got a real aggression to him.

“He wins the ball in the air. He wins it on the ground.

“He's one of the few players who gets tagged as a forward all day.

“The focus is on him, (on other forwards) defenders will largely play off and team defend.”

Buckley’s co-host Kane Cornes has also been a huge fan of Greene’s campaign, and hopes he features at the pointy end of the Brownlow Medal count despite the award typically favouring midfielders.

Cornes: “Can I ask you a question?

“How many Brownlow medal votes do you think he got last year, Toby Greene?”

Buckley: “How many did he get?”

Cornes: “Three. If he doesn't get in the twenties this year, something is seriously wrong with the system.

“That would be my thought on that.”

Buckley: “He influences games.”

Greene and the Giants will continue their finals pursuit when they host cross-town rivals Sydney at home on Saturday night.
