Cats and Swans dominate in VFL wins as Dees and Roos go down

2023-07-30T16:00+10:00

Round 19 of the VFL season is complete with four games taking place across Sunday.

The first matchup of the day was held at Casey Fields with Williamstown knocking off the Demons 74-75 thanks to a Liam Conway goal in the dying seconds.

The win sees the Seagulls solidify their place in the top six as they now sit equal with Casey on 11 wins apiece.

For Casey, Luke Dunstan (one goal, 35 disposals), Michael Hibberd (32 disposals) and Bailey Laurie (one goal, 20 disposals) all push for senior selection.

The big watch throughout the day was Brodie Grundy who continued his stint in the state-league.

Grundy had just 10 touches and two marks while failing to hit the scoreboard. When he spent time in the ruck though he battled well to win 31 disposals while making six tackles.

The day’s second game was held at GMHBA Stadium with Geelong thrashing the Northern Bullants 132-42.

Youngster Ollie Dempsey was enormous for the Cats with a monster five-goal, 28-disposal performance and he was well supported by the likes of Mitch Knevitt (two goals, 27 disposals), Brandan Parfitt (one goal, 38 disposals) and Shannon Neale (three goals, 21 disposals).

The heavy defeat meant the Bullants’ percentage took another blow with it now sitting at 41.5.

The third game of the day was held at Windy Hill with Sydney defeating Essendon 44-126.

Potential trade target Dylan Stephens (one goal, 32 disposals) picked up plenty of footy for the Swans and he was helped by Jack Buller (four goals), Tom Hickey (25 disposals, 27 hitouts) and Corey Warner (29 disposals).

For the Dons, Elijah Tsatas (22 disposals) and Kaine Baldwin (21 disposals, seven marks) can hold their heads high.

The last game of the day took place at Arden Street with the Kangaroos going down 53-110 to Werribee.

North Melbourne had few standouts in an overall poor performance while the Tigers continued to keep the pressure on ladder-leaders Gold Coast as they picked up their 14th win of the season.

Three rounds are remaining in the VFL season before finals kick-off.
