Where does the retiring Shannon Hurn rank among all-time great Eagles?

2023-08-02T11:50+10:00

Former West Coast skipper Shannon Hurn announced on Tuesday that 2023 would be his last year as an AFL player.

The 35-year-old will leave the game a premiership captain, a two time All-Australian, a one-time AFLPA best captain and will end up a 334-game great after he plays the final two home games of 2023.

A true professional in every sense of the word and one of the most consistent performers across his near two-decade stay at the club after being drafted with pick No.13 in the 2005 National Draft, Hurn departs West Coast as a club legend.

Former West Coast forward and SEN WA host Scott Cummings believes Hurn will go down as a top 20 all-time Eagle once it’s all said and done.

“He's got 332 games,” Cummings told SEN WA Breakfast.

“He's a premiership captain, a two-time All-Australian … I think he's definitely a top 20 Eagle of all-time.

“That’s for impact, longevity, obviously and the consistency of that longevity.

“Top 20 is an enormous feat given the hundreds of players that have played there, enormous.

“It’s just the respect that he's got from everyone that he's come across, it's brilliant.

“One of the best things about how you can judge a bloke, I don’t think he's changed much from the day he's walked in the door, despite all the accolades or all the attention that he's never really sought.”

The West Coast games record holder will say farewell to Eagles fans in his final two home games against Fremantle in Round 22 and Adelaide in Round 24.
