Report: Gale turns down major AFL role to stay at Richmond

2023-08-04T19:50+10:00

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale is staying at Punt Road after turning down a job at AFL House, The Age’s Caroline Wilson reports.

Gale was the AFL’s first choice for an executive general manager of football role in a new look AFL House under incoming CEO Andrew Dillon.

But it’s now understood that Gale will stick around with richmond for at least one more season. He’ll be responsible for selecting Richmond’s new coach in the coming weeks and launching a redevelopment of Punt Road in the near future.

Wilson also reports it now leaves Gale as the clear pick to be the chief executive of the incoming Tasmanian side after the 19th license was awarded earlier this year.

As SEN’s Tom Morris last month, if Gale formally rejects the job, chief executives in the form of Simon Garlick (Fremantle), Tom Harley (Sydney) and Ameet Bains (Western Bulldogs) loom as the next best options.

The revamped role in charge of football is believed to include new responsibilities with fixturing, Tasmania, concussion and more.

Former AFL boss of fixturing, clubs and finances Travis Auld formally departed the league on Friday to take up a job with the Grand Prix, another factor in the search for a new senior AFL executive.
