Brisbane certain they can improve interstate record as crunch Dockers clash awaits

2023-08-06T14:20+10:00

Brisbane are aware of the external noise surrounding their interstate record, assistant coach Cam Bruce admits.

At the Gabba this year, the Lions hold an imposing 9-0 record, while they are a meagre 4-6 when playing away.

While the Lions haven’t been as strong as they’d like while playing away, Bruce says the external noise on the issue is far louder in the media than inside the club’s four walls.

“Certainly, the external noise is a hell of a lot stronger and more prevalent than what we think,” Bruce said on SEN WA Breakfast.

“We're aware that we have an absolutely dominant record at home like a lot of interstate sides and that we have given up some games interstate.

“But we've certainly had some really strong performances interstate as well.

“We know it's a big task going to another team's home ground and getting it done when they've got their own supporters there.”

Brisbane will hope to improve their away record on Sunday when they face Fremantle at Optus Stadium in a game that could be crucial to their top-two spots.

The Lions lost in their last two trips to Perth, both to the Dockers, including a 14-point defeat in Round 12, 2022.

Despite this, Bruce is confident that if the Lions play their best that they can win at Optus Stadium, or anywhere in Australia for that matter.

“We are certainly really confident in our game style and if we bring what we've done for so much of this season, we can win anywhere,” Bruce said.

“I think we've proven that. We have won at the MCG in the past. We’ve won in Melbourne at Marvel. We've won in Canberra this year.

“We're really confident we can win interstate. It certainly provides a lot of media interest, but in our four wheels, we're really confident.”

Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium between the Dockers and Lions is set for 4:40 pm (AEST).
