Tom Morris provides trade update on potential GWS salary dump, star Eagle, young Suns and more

2023-08-07T09:07+10:00

SEN’s Tom Morris has offered an update on several players whose futures are in question this off-season.

Morris joined Kane Cornes and Nathan Buckley on SEN Breakfast where he put a Giant on the trade radar, questioned a star Eagle’s next move and revealed a pair of signings on the Gold Coast.

Check out Morris’ trade update below.

Highly-paid All-Australian contender considered gettable.

“I just want to put Nick Haynes’ name on the radar this morning,” Morris said.

“He's out of contract at the end of 2024, there’s a few conflicting reports on what he's due to earn next year.

“Two clubs told me last week that he's due to earn more than $1.2 million next year. It’s a back ended deal, his money has been pushed back.

“The Herald Sun has reported he's due to earn just less than a million dollars a year. So, either way, it’s a heavy deal that he’s on next year.

“The way these clubs see it, if a club is willing to absorb that money, then he's every chance to be gettable in the trade period for a late draft pick.

“It’s essentially a salary dump, and Lachie Whitfield was talked about in the same way about two months ago.

“But with these discussions, the word around Lachie Whitfield now is that his form is too good, and Adam Kingsley loves him, and he won't be going anywhere.

“It's also complicated by the fact that Whitfield is contracted until the end of 2027, whereas Haynes on that heavily back-ended deal only has another 12 months to run.”

While Haynes may be gettable for a late pick, Cornes says he’d be looking for GWS to throw in a valuable pick if he were a rival club willing to take on the huge salary.

“If I was a club looking at Haynes, I'd want more than absorbing his contract,” Cornes said.

“I'd want a first-round draft pick chucked in as well. There wouldn't be a club in their right mind that would absorb $1.2 million.”

Too soon to lock in a move to Sydney for star Eagle

“People seem to think this is a foregone conclusion that he's going to the Swans, but I'm not so sure.

“The Swans have had interest at least for two years.

“He re-signed long term a couple of years to go at West Coast.

“He's got a young family in Perth. Sydney will have a go for sure, but I think it's too soon to lock him in.

“I wouldn't be going too hard, too early at Tom Barrass leaving the West Coast Eagles.”

Futures locked in for young Gold Coast duo

“Just a quick one on the Suns.

“Alex Davies is locked in until the end of 2024.

“Tom Berry signed a three-year contract when he arrived from Brisbane. He’s locked in until 2025.”
