Haas set to reject contract extension and test the open market

2023-08-08T10:15+10:00

Brisbane Broncos forward Payne Haas is reportedly committed to test the open market come November 1 despite being tabled a three-year extension worth $1.1 million per year.

Haas is one of the favourites to take home the Dally M Medal this season and has been in sensational form throughout the season. However, there is confusion over his motivation for a new contract with his management suggesting that Haas prioritises a premiership rather than cash.

The Daily Telegraph’s Michael Carayannis doesn’t understand why Haas doesn’t want to commit to the Broncos who appear to be the only challenger to the Penrith Panthers three-peat ambitions.

“I can’t (explain this one),” Carayannis said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“The Broncos have put in a three-year contract extension to Haas’ management.

“That would make him the most expensive player in Broncos history with the way that it’s tracking.

“It will take him to the end of 2027 but at the moment, all indications are that he will explore the open market come November 1.

“You think the $1.1 million will be the max (offer from Brisbane) and they are in the hunt for that premiership.

“Penrith are obviously a step ahead but if you look at a side that can beat them then Brisbane is the first club that comes to mind.

“If he’s looking to be highly paid at a successful club, you would say that he is at one.”

The Broncos return to the Gabba on Friday night as they host the Parramatta Eels in Round 24.
