Demons labelled “the biggest story” of Round 22 as Grundy recall questioned

2023-08-11T08:00+10:00

Melbourne made headlines at the selection table ahead of their blockbuster clash against Carlton on Saturday night at the MCG.

As well as bringing back Clayton Oliver from a hamstring injury for his first game since Round 10, the Demons opted to recall axed ruckman Brodie Grundy.

Grundy hasn’t played at AFL level across the last month with captain Max Gawn flourishing as he shoulders the bulk of the ruck duties.

With Gawn in stellar form, it’s expected that Grundy will play more forward with Harrison Petty out injured, but Kane Cornes isn’t sure that was the right call.

Despite spending more time inside 50 in the VFL, Grundy only managed one goal from two games and Cornes says he would have gone with a different look if he were coach Simon Goodwin.

He discussed how Melbourne will shape up for the big clash with David King on SEN Breakfast.

King: “I'm just looking at the Melbourne Footy Club this weekend.

“I think they're the biggest story for me.”

Cornes: “No doubt.”

King: “Brodie Grundy is back in and Clayton Oliver returns.

“The story is how they use their stars and where they use their stars, how their forward line looks.

“What do you do with Oliver? What does that do to (Christian) Petracca? They're the one that I'll be focusing on where they spend their minutes and how effective they are this week.”

Cornes: “Also, how it affects Gawn in all of that.

“I think that it's going to be the biggest talking point on Monday.

“I mean, if they win and it goes well, probably not and they get away with it, but it's going to be fascinating and intriguing as we're three weeks out from finals.

“You often speak about getting your team set before finals, so this is potentially disruptive.

“Now, they've been forced to do it (pick Grundy) with Petty's injury.

“I wouldn't have gone with Grundy, I would have gone with more of a dedicated forward.”

King: “Who? They don’t have one.”

Cornes: “Well, I would have probably gone with (Adam) Tomlinson back and (Joel) Smith forward.

“I know he (Smith) is not a key forward, but he's a better forward than Brodie.”

King: “I think they're biding time until Tom McDonald gets back. He'll probably be that target.”

The bounce for Saturday’s huge game is set for 7:30pm AEST at the ‘G.
