2023-08-10T11:10+10:00

Josh Jenkins and Sam Edmund have undertaken the task of putting together their 22Under22 teams for the 2023 season.

Following the release of the squad by the AFL Players Association, the pair went through each of their 22s on SEN Breakfast.

Edmund said: “It’s a nightmare to do it when you see the squad. You think how are you possibly going to do it.”

Chairman of Selectors, former Fremantle and Gold Coast midfielder Michael Barlow, and an internal selection panel at the AFLPA selected the squad of 44 to pick from.

To be eligible, players are required to play 50 per cent of games in season, equating to 12 matches. Fans decide the final team of 22 which will be announced on August 23 on the AFLPA’s social platforms.

Edmund’s 22Under22 team

B: Trent Rivers (MEL) / Nick Murray (ADE) / Miles Bergman (PA)
HB: Harry Sheezel (NM) / Sam De Koning (GEE) / Nick Daicos (COL)
C: Nic Martin (ESS) / Tom Green (GWS) / Errol Gulden (SYD)
HF: Mitch Owens (STK) / Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (WB) / Josh Rachele (ADE)
F: Kysaiah Pickett (MEL) / Jye Amiss (FRE) / Cody Weightman (WB)
FOL: Luke Jackson (FRE) / Noah Anderson (GCS) / Caleb Serong (FRE)
I/C: Will Ashcroft (BRI) / Matt Rowell (GCS) / Will Day (HAW) / Hayden Young (FRE)

Edmund explained some of his choices.

“Rachele and Beau McCreery I agonised over, but I just think Rachele has got more class,” he said.

“Hayden Young and Nick Daicos, I wanted Young there (at half-back) and Daicos on-ball. I just couldn’t fit Daicos there because none of the other midfielders can play anywhere else.

“I couldn’t put Tom Green, Noah Anderson or Caleb Serong anywhere else. I wanted my wingers to be wingers so in the end I’ve had to put Nick Daicos at half-back. He’s played three quarters of the year there so that’s where I’ve got him.”

Jenkins asked Edmund: “Is Jai Newcombe in your side?”

Edmund replied: “I just couldn’t fit the Prince of Poowong in.”
