The best individual Grand Final performance since 2010 according to Champion Data

2023-08-10T15:20+10:00

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has revealed the best individual Grand Final performance since 2010.

According to the official player ratings, Luke Shuey’s outing in the 2018 Grand Final between West Coast and Collingwood stands above the rest.

Shuey took home the Norm Smith medal in the 79-74 win as he collected 34 disposals, kicked a goal, laid eight tackles and had nine clearances.

Hoyne says Shuey’s game is clearly the highest-rated from any player in a Grand Final since the ratings were introduced.

“The ratings have been in place since 2010,” Hoyne explained on SEN Sportsday.

“So, before people jump on and go down our throat, this is only from 2010 onwards.

“Ironically with Luke Shuey retiring, his Grand Final in 2018, was clearly the highest-rated Grand Final that we have on our rating system since 2010.”

Shuey’s official rating of 35.7 was the fourth highest for any individual game across the entirety of the 2018 season, while it was clearly the top-rated performance from that finals series.

Hoyne described producing such an outing on the season’s biggest day as “ridiculous”.

“He rated 35 AFL player rating points,” Hoyne said.

“To put that into context, the best player across the whole season would average 18 to 20 AFL player rating points (a game).

“To average 35 (in a single game), that makes it a top-five game that season.

“For that to be on Grand Final day … it is ridiculous what he did in 2018.”
