AFL acknowleges one error but stands behind boundary umpire on contentious Cameron call

2023-08-12T11:25+10:00

The AFL has acknowledged an error with one of Jeremy Cameron’s contentious goals on Friday night, but stands behind its boundary umpire on the other.

Cameron booted 7.4 in a herculean performance than almost dragged the Cats over the line in an eventual narrow loss to the Pies.

But the Geelong spearhead is widely acknowledged to be fortunate with two of his majors.

In the fourth term, Cameron received a handball from Brad Close while over the boundary and would goal with a snap as Geelong narrowed the margin.

The league has conceded that decision was a mistake and the ball should have been recalled for a boundary throw in.

But on the contentious mark on the commentary-side boundary midway through the third term, after which Cameron would go on to slot a perfect banana, the AFL is standing strong.

New footage has been released by the AFL showing a reverse angle of the call.

“The AFL is saying while the broadcast angle looks out of bounds, an additional angle points to Cameron taking the ball on the line and hence controlling the ball on the line,” SEN’s Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“The umpire is in the best position to make the call… ‘we back the umpire that the correct call was made’.”
