Carlton provides update on Silvagni contract, Docherty injury

2023-08-14T09:40+10:00

Carlton’s head of football Brad Lloyd has issued an update on contract talks involving Jack Silvagni.

The 25-year-old is out of contract this year and is yet to put pen to an extension that would see him remain a Blue.

Silvagni is seen as a heart and soul player who is so vital to the senior side due to his versatility in varying roles - a scenario that many believe should win him a new contract.

With that in mind, SEN Breakfast’s Kane Cornes asked Lloyd: “Why wouldn’t he be offered a contract yet?”

To which Lloyd replied: “With Jack, we’re talking to his manager pretty regularly.

“So both parties are pretty comfortable with where it’s at. We’re working through that.

“He’s one of three or four players that we’re talking to and working through where that sits.

“He’s a quality AFL player, he’s pretty valuable for us, but it’s not quite there yet.

“So he’s (one of) a number of list spots we’re working through.”

Silvagni has played 16 games this year but is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

He is alongside Sam Docherty in the medical room after he was subbed out of Saturday night’s narrow win over Melbourne with a calf issue.

Lloyd was bullish that Docherty’s injury was not too serious.

“He got more of a kick in the calf,” Lloyd said of Docherty.

“We’ll have a better look at it this morning when we get in.

“It’s very minor, just a bit of a kick in the calf. It’s one of those ones, it was a bit precautionary.

“I know ‘Vossy’ (Michael Voss) and Andrew Russell had a chat at three-quarter time to see how he was going and decided to keep him going then sub him as the (fourth) quarter went on.

“I don’t think it will be anything major.”

Docherty will be monitored as Carlton prepares for the clash with Gold Coast at Heritage Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues currently sit fifth on the back of an eight-game winning streak and a win against the Suns would well and truly lock in a first finals appearance since 2013.
