Could young Collingwood star one day become a midfielder?

2023-08-15T08:30+10:00

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding Collingwood’s midfield and whether it is potentially one-paced.

Jordan De Goey, Tom Mitchell, Scott Pendlebury, Taylor Adams and Pat Lipinski had the most centre bounce attendances for the Magpies on Friday night against Geelong, none of whom are particularly quick.

De Goey is also the only one in the group with some burst and power from stoppage.

Nick Daicos will be the future star of Collingwood’s on-ball unit, but Kane Cornes believes Isaac Quaynor has the skillset to become a midfielder as well.

“This is a little bit radical so bear with me, I just wonder if Isaac Quaynor eventually ends up as a midfielder,” Cornes told SEN’s Sportsday.

“I look at what Will Day has done at Hawthorn starting across half back. Look at what Hayden Young is doing at Fremantle. Wil Powell is the same at Gold Coast, when he’s fit I think he can do that.

“I think Quaynor has the attributes to do what Day has done and go inside and play on-ball.

“He gives them some speed, he’s tough enough to go in there.

“Now, it would be a bit radical to do it now given how settled he is and how good he’s been behind the ball.

“There’s one I think in time who can inject something into that midfield perhaps when Scott Pendlebury moves on.”

Quaynor will be in All-Australian squad consideration this year as a lockdown small defender after a career best 2023 season.
