Stars align for Riewoldt and Mr Brightside six years on from iconic GF moment

2023-08-16T15:45+10:00

Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt will play his final AFL game on Saturday.

His 347th and final match takes place at the MCG against North Melbourne, which kicks off at 1:45pm AEST.

Riewoldt will leave the game as one of the Tigers’ most decorated footballers. Over the course of his 17-year career, the 34-year-old won three premierships, claimed three Coleman Medals, made three All-Australian teams and won two Jack Dyer Medals.

Apart from his antics on the footy field, Riewoldt is fairly well known for joining The Killers on stage after the 2017 Grand Final triumph over Adelaide at the ‘G.

Resplendent in Richmond’s bright yellow ‘away’ strip, Riewoldt belted out the Killers’ smash hit ‘Mr Brightside’ alongside frontman Brandon Flowers.

In the horse racing world, there is a very handy galloper in the Hayes stable named Mr Brightside.

Ben, JD and Will Hayes (who played 13 AFL games for the Western Bulldogs and Carlton) train Mr Brightside and will run him first-up in the PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield.

Riewoldt was the ambassador for Mr Brightside during All-Star Mile voting earlier this year, before the gelding took out the $5 million fan-voted race in March.

As Riewoldt is chaired off the MCG after his final game or (hopefully) singing ‘Oh We’re From Tigerland’ in the rooms, Mr Brightside will be jumping out of the gates in his 4:40pm race.

It’s a nice little wrinkle on what promises to be an emotional yet celebratory day for many of the Tiger persuasion.

The Tigers are a strong chance of getting up over the Kangaroos, Riewoldt will be keen to pile on some goals in his final act, while Mr Brightside is currently the $1.90 favourite for the PB Lawrence.

So for those who enjoy a flutter, perhaps take a cheeky little multi of Richmond to win, Riewoldt to kick 4 or more goals and Mr Brightside to win Race 9 at around the $5.7 mark with Sportsbet.
