Sydney list manager on Grundy interest, Ben McKay, Dylan Stephens and more

2023-08-17T18:40+10:00

Sydney list manager Kinnear Beatson has opened up on the club’s plans this off-season on AFL.com.au’s Gettable.

Beatson told hosts Cal Twomey and Riley Beveridge that he expects the Swans to be active in the upcoming trade period.

The Swans are famous for their ability to do deals and operate in relative silence but Beatson was open on several options the club may look at.

Check out the list manager’s responses to several burning questions facing Sydney’s future list plans.

On Brodie Grundy

The ruckman is considered gettable after being dropped from Melbourne’s side less than a year into his high-profile move from Collingwood.

Beatson: “I think you’d be mad not to have a look at Brodie.”

On free agent Ben McKay

The North Melbourne defender is a restricted free agent and could fill a need for the Swans down back.

Beatson: “Yep, we’re tracking Ben.

“We’re looking at what that might look like.”

On Gold Coast’s first-round pick

Gold Coast’s pick (currently pick 4) is reportedly on the table as the Suns look to bank points for several Academy products.

Beatson: “Yeah, absolutely (we will look at that pick).

“We’ll look at all options and we’re exploring them at the moment.

“We’ll catch up with the Gold Coast Suns boys … we’ll have a bit of a chat about what they’re looking for to be able to do that.

“To see whether we can facilitate it or whether we need to hold those picks for trades or whatever.

“There’s a fair bit to play out in the next month.”

On out-of-contract youngster Dylan Stephens

The former top five pick is coming off contract and is reportedly gathering interest from Victorian clubs.

Beatson: “We’ve had a contract offer in front of Dylan and his management for most of this year.

“They wanted to sit on it to see where he sort of fitted into the team, he had some things to work on.

“His game last week was really encouraging … he gave us some genuine run.

“We’re really keen to keep him, time will tell…”

On out-of-contract tall Hayden McLean

The 24-year-old Swan is without a deal for 2024 and would be of interest to rival clubs.

“They’re well progressed those discussions.

“We’re hopeful that Hayden be stitched up this week … we hope.”

Sydney sits seventh on the ladder with two rounds remaining.

They face Adelaide (away) and Melbourne (SCG) in Rounds 23 and 24 respectively.
