Key St Kilda defender “on the market” ahead of trade period

St Kilda’s Dougal Howard is reportedly on the trade table this off-season.

The 27-year-old is contracted at Moorabbin until the end of the 2024 campaign but AFL.com.au’s Cal Twomey is certain he’s available in trade talks.

The Herald Sun reported earlier this month that rival clubs were expressing interest in his services as a glut of key defenders could find themselves at new homes next season.

Twomey pondered whether a club like Sydney could make a play for Howard if North Melbourne free agent Ben McKay pursues an opportunity at another club.

Howard may also be of interet to the Kangaroos if McKay opts to leave.

“Dougal is on the market,” Twomey said on AFL.com.au’s Gettable.

“He’s contracted as we say, but he’s on the market.

“Could a club like Sydney have a look at him if the McKay interest goes elsewhere? Or if McKay pursues another opportunity.

“North Melbourne are pursuing players as well clearly.”

According to reports, Howard is currently on a deal worth approximately $600,000 a season at the Saints.

He has played 75 games for the Saints since crossing over from Port Adelaide ahead of the 2020 season.

The defender is currently battling a wrist injury but could return for the Saints in this year’s finals series.
