The change in Shaun Johnson's game that has catapulted the Warriors into contenders

2023-08-24T11:50+10:00

Warriors captain Tohu Harris has credited the career best years of playmaker Shaun Johnson for the team’s outstanding 2023 campaign.

After three seasons affected by the global pandemic, the Warriors were finally able to return home to New Zealand and have thrived under rookie coach Andrew Webster.

The Warriors are now playing in front of regular packed crowds in Auckland and Harris believes Johnson has been a massive factor in New Zealand rediscovering rugby league.

“Shaun has always had the highlight plays and the ability to change a game at any moment,” Harris said on SEN 1170.

“What he has worked really hard on this year is the defensive side.

“When your halfback is leading the defensive line or making tough tackles on front rowers and putting his body on the line, it gives the team a lift.

“Any command he gives or whenever he wants the ball, the boys don’t even think twice because we know he puts his body on the line for us.

“His defence has gone to a new level and it’s the most complete I have seen him play. It’s so much fun to watch and be a part of.”

The Warriors have been the feel-good story of the 2023 NRL season. After several years at the bottom end of the ladder, Harris and his side find themselves in third with two rounds left and will likely host a home final for the first time since 2008.

Harris said the city of Auckland and the greater New Zealand area has reached fever pitch.

“I can’t explain how excited the city is,” Harris continued.

“Everywhere we go, people are on board with the Warriors and they are loving every moment of it.

“For the playing group, we are just excited to be a part of it and excited that we have given ourselves this opportunity.

“We are hungry for more and we don’t want to be content with where we are at. We want to get better.

“It’s been a fun year.”
