Another assistant coach set to depart the Western Bulldogs

2023-08-28T07:45+10:00

Off-season changes are set to continue at the Western Bulldogs, with assistant coach Marc Webb set to follow favourite son Rohan Smith out now the season is complete.

SEN.com.au understands Webb made the decision himself for family reasons.

Perth-based sources confirmed Webb is looking at returning to Western Australia, where his wife Lisa coaches Fremantle’s AFLW side.

Webb spent two seasons at the Dogs, first as midfield coach in 2022 then looking after stoppage work this year.

Before the Dogs, he spent seven years at the Dockers in a variety of football department roles and after retiring as a player, guided Claremont to a WAFL premiership in 2013.

While there are no suggestions of an external review into the disappointing 2023 campaign, footy boss Chris Grant revealed on SEN last week the club began an internal review mid-season.

This included speaking to players and staff in-depth about what could be improved. And while Luke Beveridge is safe with two years remaining on his contract, the club is eager to bolster the team of coaches around him.

The Dogs are adamant star ball-winner Bailey Smith will not be traded given he has a deal in place until the end of 2024.

Smith has been linked to Geelong by SEN’s Sam Edmund, though it’s unclear whether the Cats would be a) willing to part with Pick 8 in the draft and b) whether this would even satisfy the Dogs, who requested two first rounders for Josh Dunkley from Essendon three years ago.

Suitors will come hard for Aaron Naughton and Tim English – who are both out of contract at the end of 2024 – while player managers and list bosses believe the Dogs are keen to add more youth and speed to their midfield group.
