Sam Edmund’s trade and contract update on 18 AFL players

2023-08-30T11:50+10:00

The Trade Bell is ringing!

SEN’s Sam Edmund has provided the latest on a whole host of players whose futures are uncertain.

See what he had to say on SEN’s Whateley below:

Matt Crouch (Adelaide)

“They’re definitely shopping Matt Crouch. He’s another one who is looking for a new home.

“Geelong would be a big surprise. I would be shocked by that.

“But definitely he’s out there, he’s on the market.”

Tom Doedee (Adelaide)

“Free agent, unsigned, recovering from a knee reconstruction, has put talks on hold until season’s end.

“Brisbane have long been the most likely landing spot. He may be bound for the Gabba.”

Kai Lohmann (Brisbane)

“Uncontracted still beyond this year.

“If he does leave Brisbane I reckon he’d be a good chance to land at the Bulldogs given they asked about him in the Josh Dunkley deal.”

Deven Robertson (Brisbane)

“Continues to be linked to a move to West Coast. The Eagles have dangled the carrot with a long term contract for him.

“He remains unsigned at the Gabba beyond this year. He could be off to Perth? Possibly.”

Jack Silvagni (Carlton)

“No, not happening,” said Edmund when asked if Silvagni was set to leave for the Gold Coast.

“In fact I think he’s actually a really good chance to stay at Carlton.

“It’s far from guaranteed, of course he could leave, but just the vibe I get speaking to people is that he will now stay. He wants to stay, he loves the club, he’s Carlton through and through, but of course the deal has to be right.

“My read could be way off but just the feeling I get speaking to people around this who make the decisions are that things are moving towards re-signing.

“I’m also not sure the rival interest has been enormous either. I just think he stays.”

Zac Fisher (Carlton)

“I think it’s highly likely (that he leaves).

“North Melbourne are prepared to offer a big contract for someone like Zac Fisher, maybe as long as five years which sounds extraordinary but that is the whisper doing the rounds.

“He will have some options.”

Paddy Dow (Carlton)

“Right now Paddy Dow is still in something of a holding phase in regards to his playing future.

“The last month or two hasn’t changed a lot. There is widespread interest from other clubs because when he’s come into the Carlton setup he’s equipped himself quite well.

“St Kilda, Hawthorn, a couple of others will come. Paddy does want to stay at Carlton, that’s not the issue, but the opportunity is.

“He wants to play, the next couple of weeks are going to be crucial. This seems like a 50-50 call at the moment.”

Lochie O’Brien (Carlton)

“On the market, will not be at Carlton next year. Available to a rival club at the right price.”

Trent Bianco (Collingwood)

“Out of contract and is being shopped around by his management group.”

Liam Henry (Fremantle)

“Liam Henry will play for someone other than Fremantle. His manager’s doing the rounds at the moment.

“The list of suitors is strong. I still think the more likely landing spot will be Hawthorn and that’s not telling anyone anything new. I think that would appeal for the player, it definitely appeals for Hawthorn.

“There’ll be some competition in this space but I think Liam Henry most likely will play for the Hawks.”

Sean Darcy (Fremantle)

“It has been doing the rounds that North Melbourne were working behind the scenes in an attempt to engineer what I would have thought would be the biggest coup of this year’s trade period.

“If they were to get Sean Darcy into Arden Street in contract it would hit all the right notes. It makes a lot of sense for North Melbourne, who could lose Todd Goldstein to Essendon, or elsewhere, or they might keep him.

“But no, it’s not happening, they’re not in that market at all, North Melbourne.

“Certainly Sean Darcy has some decisions to make prior to sorting out where he’s going to sign next year.”

Esava Ratugolea (Geelong)

“Hawthorn’s offer for Esava Ratugolea…

“Multiple clubs I’ve spoken to believe that this deal sits around $5 million over seven years.

“For context, Harry Himmelberg signed a deal worth around $4.8 million over six years at GWS.”

Sam Flanders (Gold Coast)

“This has progressed to the point where it would be a big surprise if he doesn’t stay at the Gold Coast.

“Both parties are a fair way down the track on a four-year deal.”

Denver Grainger-Barras (Hawthorn)

“The Hawks would like to trade him. They’ve been pushing him out there as tradable commodity in recent times.

“He was floated on the market last year. They don’t think he’s a pure key back, which is partly the issue.

“He’s contracted until the end of next year having signed a two-year deal in February last year.”

Sam Hayes (Port Adelaide)

“Take it to the bank he’s leaving Port Adelaide. That’s going to happen, he’s canvassing the market.

“I’m not sure it’s going to be at Essendon though.”

Jade Gresham (St Kilda)

“That’s a hard one.

“Gresham has been out there for quite a while now, but something of a star on the wane too at St Kilda.

“It’s hard to find a home for Jade Gresham. I’m not sure Carlton are as interested as they once were.”

Dylan Stephens (Sydney)

“The no.5 pick in the 2019 draft who played in last year’s Grand Final has struggled for consistent opportunities.

“Has options to stay at Sydney, has option to leave. This is one for the end of the season but there is rumoured interest from the Kangaroos.”

Lewis Melican (Sydney)

“The fringe Sydney defender could be lured North Melbourne to bolster their key defence.”
