Ratten to depart Arden Street after a year, hints he won't become a senior coach again

2023-09-01T11:10+10:00

Brett Ratten will depart North Melbourne after just one year and has indicated he’s coached his last game of AFL football.

After his shock sacking by St Kilda late last year, Ratten joined the Kangaroos as an assistant coach before stepping up to fill the void left by Alastair Clarkson mid-season.

He was the Roos’ senior coach for 10 games in 2023.

Ratten suggested he’s open to a new challenge, but hinted he’ll never take on another senior coaching role.

“When I accepted the role at North Melbourne, my plan was to come in and help the club in any way I could for 12 months,” Ratten said in a club statement.

“While the role ended up different to the one I initially took on, I’ve loved my time here.

“Stepping in as interim coach gave me the opportunity to say goodbye to senior coaching which is something I’m grateful for.

“In terms of what the future looks like, I’m not sure yet. I love the game and I’m certainly open to new opportunities.”

North Melbourne footy boss Todd Viney thanked Ratten for the asset he was during 2023.

“Ratts’ vast coaching experience and football knowledge has been such an asset for us this year,” Viney noted.

“He stepped into the interim senior coach role without hesitation, and we thank him for his tireless work in helping our club to be better.

“More than that, he is an all-round great person. His perspective on life has meant he has had such a positive influence on our culture and our people.

“We wish Ratts, Jo and their family all the best in whatever comes next.”

Clarkson replaced Ratten ahead of Round 21 this season and led his side to just their third win of the season in Round 24.
