Cal Twomey’s trade update on Thomas, Perkins, Grundy and more

2023-09-05T11:26+10:00

The Trade Bell continues to ring.

AFL Media’s Cal Twomey joined SEN’s Gerard Whateley to go through a number of players who are being spoken about in trade circles.

Read his information below:

Tarryn Thomas (North Melbourne)

“For a start he’s got a year to go on his deal with North Melbourne,” Twomey said on SEN’s Whateley.

“It’s good money and I think he would have been a challenging one for clubs to rip out of the Roos on a longer term, lucrative deal. Which he would have wanted if he had put up his hand up to go.

“He’ll be at the end of his sixth year next year and I think that’s the point where it’s a bit of a career maker in 2024 for Tarryn Thomas.

“If rival clubs were going to try and wrench him out of North Melbourne, would they have been prepared to pay what the Roos would have wanted for him?

“He is potentially their most talented player. We wait and see what he does next year when he’s out of contract.”

Mabior Chol (Gold Coast)

“It was said on Gettable last week that he was up for grabs despite having two years to run on his contract.

“There’s obviously that forward line squeeze there (at the Suns). We got a statement through from his management overnight saying they’d been approached by a number of clubs that are interested in him as a trade option.

“There just aren’t that many key forward/ruckmen on the market. He’s shown he can do that at the level.

“I think we’ll see more of this once the Suns’ VFL campaign is over in the next couple of weeks.

“It’s hard to see him remaining there if there is that interest from rivals.”

Archie Perkins (Essendon)

“This arose on Twitter which always fills you with a level of doubt.

“I don’t think there’s a whole lot in that at this point. He’s got a year to go on his contract at the Bombers.

“He was a Cats fan growing up, a big Paul Chapman fan, but I think we’ll see him at the Bombers next year.”

Brodie Grundy (Melbourne)

“Every club is meeting players at the moment. Clubs have been meeting them for months.

“Port Adelaide and Sydney are chasing Brodie.

“I think there’s a reality among the clubs, list managers, players, teammates, coaches about how this works. Maybe supporter bases may feel a little bit different but I think the industry itself don’t really care as much about these meetings (while the season is ongoing), which go on and on and on and a lot of times don’t amount to anything.

“Melbourne could make the Grand Final and I think it would be odd for Grundy to wait until then to think about what he wants to do next.

“The other reality is is that he’s contracted as a Demon so a trade has to be made that satisfies them as well.

“Melbourne doesn’t have to pay a dollar if he goes, there’s no way this is going to be a three-club arrangement paying for Grundy if he does leave.

“Grundy has an agreement with Collingwood and an agreement with Melbourne at the amount. Melbourne and Collingwood don’t have an agreement.

“If he were to leave, the club that is taking him on would be taking on all that’s left from his Melbourne salary.”

Dustin Martin (Richmond)

“I think the Dustin Martin situation becomes a lot more real next year.

“I just don’t think there’s any reason for him to go up to the Gold Coast despite potentially being a bit unsettled at the moment with a new coach coming in, his old mates leaving the club, there’s an element of that.

“I don’t see any reason for him to want to go and smooth out his money next year.”

Collingwood

“I don’t think there’ll be too much happening at the Pies at this point.

“They did a lot of work last year. I think it would be a surprise if there are too many players leaving Collingwood this year.”

Ben McKay (North Melbourne)

“Ben McKay is definitely still in the market for the Bombers, there are four clubs chasing him really hard.

“Sydney is in that group, the financial situation there will be strong from a Swans point of view. We know they’ve been targeting this area of the ground.

“Port Adelaide is still interested and Hawthorn is the interesting one, well and truly in the mix.”
