Cal Twomey’s trade and contract update on Dow, Ratugolea, Tomlinson, Gresham and more

2023-09-07T12:45+10:00

There remains plenty of players in trade and contract limbo.

AFL Media’s Cal Twomey has provided the latest on a number of players and their situations.

Read his information, as heard on SEN Breakfast, below:

Kai Lohmann (Brisbane)

“We asked Western Bulldogs list manager Sam Power about him on the show (Gettable),” Twomey began.

“The Dogs are still in the mix for Kai Lohmann. He’s held off his decision until the end of this year.

“The only first-round pick from two years ago to remain unsigned. Does have Victorian interest and I think the Dogs are in that market.”

Paddy Dow (Carlton)

“Before Round 1 we all thought that St Kilda was shaping as the most likely home for Paddy Dow.

“The situation has changed a little bit because he’s actually got in and played some really good footy over the past six or seven weeks.

“I still think most likely that he’s not at Carlton next year and St Kilda shapes as a potential home for him.”

Jack Ginnivan (Collingwood)

“I think Richmond is on the lookout for some options in attack, but no, I think he’s pretty comfortable at the Pies.”

Josh Carmichael (Collingwood)

“There’s so much interest in the fringe Magpies like Fin Macrae, Reef McInnes and Trent Bianco and what they’re going to do.

“Josh Carmichael is another one. AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich is reporting is that he’s set to secure a new deal to stay at the Pies despite having a few interested onlookers from rivals clubs.

“Hasn’t been able to break into that team this year but is set for a new deal at the Pies.”

Archie Perkins (Essendon)

“No, nothing, nothing, nothing, it’s just a Twitter rumour.

“Hasn’t met North Melbourne, hasn’t met Geelong. Is staying at Essendon.”

Will Brodie (Fremantle)

“He’s got three years to go on his contract which goes until 2026.

“That would make it a little bit more of a challenge to move. It’s hard to move inside midfielders unless they’re absolutely bargain basement.”

Adam Tomlinson (Melbourne)

Will he be at Melbourne next year?

“I don’t think so.

“There’s going to be a number of clubs looking for those type of defenders. It might depend on where the big dogs go.

“But I reckon North Melbourne or Hawthorn could be an option for ‘Tommo’.”

Xavier Duursma (Port Adelaide)

Back to Victoria as part of the Ratugolea trade?

“Don’t think so.”

Port Adelaide, Esava Ratugolea (Geelong) & Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (Essendon)

“You look at Port’s hand and they’re going to have to use their first-round pick creatively if they’re going to get all their things done.

“They’ve obviously got Esava who wants to go there, I think Brandon Zerk-Thatcher will want to go there, and Brodie Grundy is a chance to want to go there.

“So how do they get that all done without a first-round pick this year and only a future first? They’ll probably have to turn the future first-round pick into multiple selections somewhere in the 20s.

“Somewhere in the early 20s is probably about right for Esava Ratugolea but he’s out of contract this year, the Cats didn’t take the early pick in the 30s last year.

“That one is going to be a haggle.”

On Zerk-Thatcher: “He played 22 games this year so there’s opportunity for him at the Bombers.

“They want to keep him, they’ve had a deal there for him as well. But I think there is a pull to go home back to South Australia for him, that’s real.

“But Tom Jonas is retiring, Tom Clurey is looking for a trade out of Port Adelaide and would be open to offers as well.

“I think there’s space for Ratugolea, Zerk-Thatcher and Aliir Aliir in the Port Adelaide backline.

“But that does mean that Hawthorn will ramp up its chase in Ben McKay and the Bombers are still clearly in that market as well.”

Jade Gresham (St Kilda)

“Very interesting situation here.

“I think there’s been a wait and a hold to see if his form can lift up to the levels of the last couple of years. There’s been moments of that without the consistency this year.

“There’s still a possibility he stays at St Kilda, I think it’s the outside chance though. I think he moves to one of the bigger Victorian clubs - Essendon, Hawthorn, Richmond - one of those sort of options.

“If he moves he’d like to play on the MCG a little bit more. That’s a watch for sure.”
