Every St Kilda and GWS player's performance in the Elimination Final rated

2023-09-09T18:43+10:00

GWS had no passengers in a Saturday afternoon Elimination Final win over St Kilda, who had to carry too many players in the 24-point defeat.

The Giants have locked in a Semi Final appearance next week with their first September triumph under Adam Kingsley and it came on the back of pace on the game.

St Kilda couldn't match it with the visitors' leg speed and it's reflected in our player ratings.

See how we rated every player below.

St Kilda

Josh Battle (B-): Had the most intercept possessions for his side but was outclassed by Jake Riccardi on some occasions. A serviceable performance.

Jimmy Webster (C): 13 disposals and little else for Webster. Perhaps did his job but certainly no more than that.

Bradley Hill (A-): One of St Kilda’s best players. Hill didn’t stop trying, got better as the game went on and contributed 29 touches and two goals.

Jade Gresham (B): Had a genuine crack and laid seven tackles from 17 touches. A strong way to end an indifferent season.

Mitch Owens (C+): Not the game we know Owens is capable, but it’s too much to expect that in his first final. Still gave a decent sight.

Rowan Marshall (A): Got the better of Kieren Briggs around the ground and was St Kilda’s best. Couldn’t have done any more against a quality opponent.

Hunter Clarke (C+): Had 19 touches but didn’t have a large say on the result.

Mattaes Phillipou (D): Barely sighted in the first half. Lifted a little bit after the main break but struggled on the big stage.

Dan Buter (D): Another issue in a Saints’ forward line that struggled for much of the day. No goals and missed his chances when he needed to stand up.

Jack Steele (A-): A 38-disposal match from the skipper but it didn’t translate on the scoreboard. His best performance for a while.

Anthony Caminiti (D): Was a late in on game day and he didn’t look near it in the opening half. Subbed out at half-time.

Jack Higgins (C-): Nailed his moment in the final term with a big goal as the comeback began. Overall, however, had a dirty night.

Seb Ross (C+): Worked hard all day but ball use let him down at times.

Jack Sinclair (B-): His creativity was on show for much of the afternoon in a typical Jack Sinclair performance.

Callum Wilkie (C-): Threatened to have a big say on the contest in the second term but didn’t kick on. Far from his best game.

Zaine Cordy (C-): Was picked over Dougal Howard and perhaps squared his battle with Jesse Hogan. Didn’t contribute anything else.

Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (A): His run and carry was there for all to see. One of the only Saints who looked to break down the GWS setup rather than bomb away.

Mason Wood (B): Wingman typically struggle in finals but Wood had a few big moments and made an impact.

Cooper Sharman (B-): Probably St Kilda’s best forward. Had a big opening term and looked lively throughout the clash.

Liam Stocker (N/A): 10 disposals in a half of footy is a decent effort after starting as the sub.

Max King (C+): Had the MCG rocking with two goals late in the second term as the Saints narrowed the margin but was quiet outside of that.

Brad Crouch (C-): Not his best performance. Only 21 possessions as a full-time midfielder isn’t up to his lofty standards.

Marcus Windhager (C+): Had a very quiet first half but quelled the Josh Kelly influence after half-time.

Greater Western Sydney

Jack Buckley (C+): Gave Caminiti a bath in the first half and was part of a GWS backline that stood up all night.

Lachie Ash (A): Ash flew under the radar but the hard-running Giant was brilliant in carving up St Kilda through the middle. 31 touches and nine marks.

Finn Callaghan (B-): Used the ball sublimely in the first half and played his role.

Toby Bedford (A-): His teammates came from everywhere to get around Bedford when he goaled in the second term. Another Giant who punched above his weight.

Daniel Lloyd (C): A goal and 12 disposals in his 99th game.

Kieren Briggs (A-): Wasn’t as good as Rowan Marshall but tried hard all day. In his side’s best.

Lachlan Keefe (C-): Only four disposals and looked proppy at times on the expanses of the MCG. Seemed to feature in a number of roles.

Callum Brown (B-): Not much impact outside of two goals but that’s more than enough for Brown to play his role.

Xavier O’Halloran (C-): 10 touches from 69 per cent time on ground. Didn’t have the influence he knows he can have.

Callan Ward (C): A relatively quiet night but used the ball well and had a crack when it was his turn.

Nick Haynes (N/A): Came on late to gather four touches across half-back when the game was won.

Harry Perryman (B-): One of the toughest Giants at Kingsley’s disposal, Perryman laid a club-high six tackles and used the ball well.

Connor Idun (A-): The most intercept possessions on the ground. Highly rated internally by the Giants and he could prove why to the footy community this September.

Jesse Hogan (C+): Two goals and 11 touches to do his job.

Jake Riccardi (B+): Loomed as his side’s best forward all night and wasn’t far off a massive night.

Tom Green (A+): A typical Tom Green performance, the young Giant had the ball on a string. Team highs in disposals and contested possessions.

Harry Himmelberg (B): One of the generals down back, Himmelberg largely took care of Mitch Owens and had an impact himself.

Sam Taylor (B+): Had the better of Max King for the vast majority of Saturday’s clash. Looked to have no issue with the hamstring injury that kept him out of last week’s game.

Isaac Cumming (C): Subbed off late in the game with 10 touches to his name. Didn’t have a big influence in terms of run and carry.

Lachie Whitfield (A): Ran harder than anyone on the MCG and was often rewarded as the Giants’ link-up player in their transition.

Josh Kelly (A+): Had 19 disposals and two goals in the first half when the game was on the line. Enough said.

Brent Daniels (B+): So often an overlooked part of this GWS line-up, Daniels was sublime again. 18 disposals, seven score involvements and a goal is a standard game for him.

Toby Greene (B-): Kicked GWS’ first of the day and was influential in the visitors pulling away in the first half. Faded after half-time.
