“It wasn’t pretty” but Storm books prelim spot with narrow triumph over Roosters

2023-09-16T00:09+10:00

Melbourne Storm has made up for last week’s shellacking by knocking off the Sydney Roosters in a nail-biting triumph.

Coming off a 26-0 thumping at the hands of the Broncos last week, Craig Bellamy’s side responded and lifted late to run out narrow winners.

The 18-13 win came despite leading 10-0 at one point in the first half, but tries on either side of the break to the Roosters handed them the ascendancy.

Cam Munster landed the final blow when finding Will Warbick with a perfect kick in the dying minutes at AAMI Park.

Bellamy himself acknowledged his side wasn’t at its best. But for the Storm, it was a performance that had to happen as some belief returned to the group.

“Really proud of how we stuck in there,” Bellamy said post-game.

“It wasn’t pretty without a doubt, but we needed to come back with a display like that after last week.

“We were all disappointed in how we performed last week and it’s not just the players — we help prepare so there’s some things we probably didn’t do well either.

“Really impressed with how the club fought back after being disappointed last weekend... We live to fight another day.”

Melbourne now faces an uphill climb to advance to the Grand Final, however. Next week, they’ll come up against a Penrith Panthers outfit fresh off a week off and likely to regain Jarome Luai in a prelim.

But as Bellamy notes, there’s plenty of potential for improvement.
