St Kilda great Kevin Neale passes away, aged 78

2023-09-17T11:50+11:00

St Kilda great Kevin Neale has passed away at the age of 78.

The 1966 premiership hero was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2018.

Neale joined St Kilda in 1965 from South Warrnambool and was a critical member of the club’s only Grand Final winning team as he kicked five goals in the one-point win over Collingwood.

While Neale started up forward for the Saints, his versatility saw him shift to defence for much of his 256 games for the club.

‘Cowboy’ excelled down back and was eventually recognised for his outstanding performances in the red, white and black by being named in the back pocket of the St Kilda team of the Century.

Following his VFL career, Neale captain-coached Canberra club Ainslie to four premierships. He also coached Central District in the SANFL.

Neale will be remembered as a larger-than-life character that was loved by his teammates.

SEN sends their condolences to all of his friends and the Neale family, our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
