Magpies showing interest in Crows free agent with available cap space

2023-09-20T16:10+10:00

Collingwood is showing interest in Adelaide free agent Tom Doedee, according to AFL Media’s Cal Twomey.

Doedee is a restricted free agent and reportedly is considering leaving the Crows after being offered a revised contract by the club.

The new contract was tabled to the out-of-contract defender after he missed the second half of the 2023 season after tearing his ACL in Round 12, with the deal shorter and worth less money than what he was originally tabled pre-injury.

Twomey says Collingwood’s interest in Doedee has grown with the belief he could eventually replace Jeremy Howe in the back six with the Magpies having some room in their salary cap to spend.

“They have some room to move,” Twomey said on AFL.com.au’s Gettable.

“The one I want to put on the radar is Tom Doedee. We revealed last week on Inside Trading that they have an interest in the Adelaide free agent.

“You look at their future team, Jeremy Howe could be in his last season next year.

“They’re looking into the void there and Doedee as a free agent could give them some coverage in that part of the ground.

“So, there is some interest in there as we’ve reported.”

While Collingwood is interested in the 26-year-old, Twomey believes Brisbane is still the favourite for his services as he appears more likely to leave than stay at West Lakes.

“That’s one if he doesn’t choose Brisbane,” Twomey said.

“I still think Brisbane are probably the favourite.

“Mid-year I think he was probably leaning to stay, I think he’s now probably leaning to go.

“That’s just the way the contract looks like it is going to go.”

As well as potentially chasing Doedee, Collingwood have some decisions to make on out-of-contract players including flanker Trent Bianco and tall Nathan Kreuger.

“There’s still a few uncontracted at the Pies,” Twomey said.

“Trent Bianco – clubs are having a look at him.

“Nathan Kreuger has a one-year contract in front of him, I think he’ll sign that extension.”

Before the off-season, Collingwood will be focused on their Preliminary Final matchup against GWS at the MCG on Friday night.

The winner will book a spot in the 2023 AFL Grand Final against either Brisbane or Carlton.
