NSW Blues advisor Alexander steps away from Origin commitments

2023-09-22T08:21+10:00

New South Wales Blues advisor Greg Alexander has revealed that he’ll be stepping back from his Origin commitments.

Alexander has been coach Brad Fittler’s right hand man across the last six years, with the Blues holding a 3-3 series record in that time, but won’t be a part of the state’s 2024 campaign.

Alexander broke the news to The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio on Friday morning where he opened up on his decision to move on.

The Penrith great informed Fittler of his call last week with the coach still looking to stay in the job into the future.

“David (Riccio), I've taken you into my confidence over the last couple of years regarding Origin because you've been very close to the New South Wales camp,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Breakfast with Vossy and Brandy.

“We've spoken about my role a number of times and I decided last week, I spoke to Freddy last week, that 2023 would be my final State of Origin series.

“So Freddy's got an appointment with the board today to run through what he's thinking about.

“I know Freddy still wants to coach, he still wants the job. I certainly wish him well on that.

“But my time is over, I'm done.”

Alexander said Fittler respected his decision and didn’t try and talk him back into taking the role on for one more campaign.

At this stage, he said he hasn’t discussed who his potential replacement could be for the 2024 campaign.

“No, that's it,” Alexander said. “Yes (he respects my decision).

“We didn't talk about who might do that role.

“But after six years and six - I've got to say fantastic years - they were up and down, but that's Origin, the rollercoaster as seductive as it is to have another go … I've just decided that that that's enough.

Alexander’s decision comes as he puts more time into co-hosting Breakfast with Vossy and Brandy on the SEN 1170 airwaves with Andrew Voss.

“It's been a massive part of my six years but it's a big commitment and I've committed elsewhere to do the show with you (Voss),” he said.
