The Saint desperate to get out as St Kilda remains frontrunner for fringe Carlton midfielder

2023-10-03T08:44+11:00

Jack Billings is increasingly keen to leave St Kilda this trade period, reports SEN’s Tom Morris.

The 28-year-old remains contracted with the Saints until the end of 2025, but is eager to find a new home in a bid to revitalise his career.

Billings has been restricted to just 11 games over the last two seasons due to various injuries, playing just three times under Ross Lyon in 2023.

Morris is of the belief that Billings is extremely gettable provided a rival club is interested in his services.

“Jack Billings is a player that is desperate to get out,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“St Kilda is more than happy to facilitate a trade, but they just need a club to be keen.

“Now, you might say why would a club take Jack Billings? He’s on $500,000 a year over the next couple of years, he’s got two years remaining on his deal. But we need to reevaluate what $500,000 a year is. It’s not what it used to be, it’s barely above the average now. In a couple of years it’s probably right on average, even just below.

“A club won’t have to give up much in terms of a draft pick, they can probably spread a deal and give him a third year. Billings is a nice cream-on-top sort of player, I know he’s had some injuries in the past couple of seasons, but he is very gettable.

“He’s very much at the top of a list of players that can be traded for not much. He was Pick 3 a decade ago, he’s probably still got some good footy left in him. For whatever reason it hasn’t worked out under Ross.

“If you’re a rival list manager and you’re thinking we can fit Jack Billings in, I don’t think it’s going to be too hard to get that deal done.”

It’s unclear at this stage whether or not any rival clubs have come knocking for Billings, who is managed by Paul Connors.

With one Saint potentially set to walk out the Moorabbin exit door, there could be at least one new player coming in.

Fringe Carlton midfielder Paddy Dow is available as he is coming out of contract at the Blues.

There are rumours that Dow is in Sydney for a medical with the Swans, but Morris is confident they’ll end up at the Saints.

“I think Sydney are still believing there’s a chance but I think St Kilda is the frontrunner,” he added.

“That three-year deal from St Kilda is pretty enticing and I think it’s been on the table for quite some time.

“My information is that Paddy Dow is overseas at the moment and he gets back just before the Carlton best and fairest on Sunday. Unless he can do a medical while he’s overseas, or he’s already done it, I’m not sure.

“But I do think he’ll get to St Kilda and there’s every chance he gets to St Kilda as a delisted free agent. The Saints wouldn’t have to give up anything for him and the same would apply to the Sydney Swans as well.

“He’s the sort of player the Swans are looking for. They’ve got James Jordon as a free agent from Melbourne, they’re looking to bolster their midfield department pretty strongly this off-season and not give up too much to get these players.

“Dow and Jordon fit that bill.”
