Race for Doedee narrows to two as Cornes praises Crows' list call

2023-10-03T14:16+11:00

Sydney is out of the race for Adelaide defender Tom Doedee, with Brisbane and Collingwood the two suitors left.

SEN’s Tom Morris broke the news on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Feed, with Doedee remaining at Adelaide highly unlikely.

Dodee missed much of the season with a ruptured ACL and is out of contract with the Crows.

The 26-year-old enters the player movement period as a restricted free agent, meaning Adelaide can match a bid for Doedee and force a trade.

But with the versatile tall essentially out the door, the race for his signature for 2024 and beyond is down to the two Grand Finallists of 2023.

“We’re waiting on a decision from Tom Doedee and it’s been common knowledge that Collingwood and Brisbane are the main two clubs (interested), but the Sydney Swans recently reignited their interest when they missed out on Ben McKay,” Morris told AFL Trade Radio's Trade Feed.

“I can tell you that the Swans are no longer in for Tom Doedee, it is down to legitimately two. It’s Collingwood or Brisbane.”

SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund added: “It’s not going to be Adelaide (either). It’s down to those two because they are prepared to give him – we think – the contract that he can’t quiet acquire at Adelaide.”

If Adelaide’s doesn’t match a bid, they will receive draft compensation for Doedee’s departure.

It comes as Kane Cornes praised the Crows for sticking true firm on its current contract offer for Doedee.

It’s understood Doedee, who has played 82 games for Adelaide since debuting in 2018, had his contract offer modified after his knee injury earlier this year

“I loved what Adelaide has done… they could have easily offered Tom Doedee five or six years and he would of stayed because he’d be looking for that security at his age and durability issues,” Cornes began on SEN Mornings.

“Adelaide has (likely) said, ‘we’re probably not confident you’d see out a (longer term deal)…’ So I’m assuming they would have offered a three-year deal on reasonable terms and he’s decided to go somewhere else and explore options.

“I think it’s a good move for Adelaide and maybe some clubs are starting to learn (not to offer long-term contracts).

Doedee has been in Adelaide’s leadership group since 2020 and was widely tipped to succeed Rory Sloane as Adelaide captain earlier this year before that role went to Jordan Dawson.
