Alexander questions long-term effects of extended 2023 NRL schedule

2023-10-04T14:22+11:00

Is the current domestic and international schedule too demanding on the current crop of players?

After enduring a record-long season in 2023, many of the competition’s top stars will suit up for another month of football as the international calendar swings into gear.

With many of the Grand Final stars set to back for three additional games, SEN’s Greg Alexander listed his concerns for the wellbeing of the players.

“I was thinking about that driving home from Penrith, I felt like I’d play a game, I was sore,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“Both teams (are) chocked with State of Origin players, they’ve had long tough seasons, big finals series, they have to now back up and play for another month.

“We’ve got another month of footy, November 5 they stop, are asking too much of our best players?”

Alexander noted that whilst international footy is still a crucial aspect of the game, the players may be feeling the after-effects of a prolonged season.

“I know international football is important but there will be 10 players who played, Origin, Finals, the Grand Final, most of the regular season,” Alexander added.

“We are squeezing the life out of our top players.”

The Pacific Championship Series kicks off on October 14 with Australia taking on Samoa in Townsville.
