Brownlow Medallist pipped in Brisbane best and fairest

2023-10-05T06:30+11:00

Brisbane’s Harris Andrews has beaten his co-captain Lachie Neale to win the Merrett-Murray Medal on Wednesday night.

The star defender polled 62 votes to pip the 2023 Brownlow Medallist by one vote in a tight count, resulting in his first best and fairest award.

It was the first time since 2015 that a player other than Dayne Zorko or Neale has won the Brisbane B&F.

Neale joins former West Coast midfielder Matt Priddis (2014) as the most recent players to have won the Brownlow yet not won their club best and fairest or gained selection in the All-Australian team that season.

Midfielder Hugh McCluggage (59), first-year Lion Josh Dunkley (56), the dynamic Cam Rayner and lockdown defender Brandon Starcevich (both 53) rounded out the top handful.

Other award winners for the 2023 runners-up included Will Ashcroft who was named Rookie of the Year, Dunkley who won the Players’ Player of the Year, and Keidean Coleman and McCluggage who shared the Finals Player Award.
