Kane Cornes has said that he would trade Harry McKay for Clayton Oliver if he was running the show at Carlton.
The footy world was shocked with reports that Melbourne would be open to trading the superstar midfielder if the right deal was put in front of them, despite locking him in on a lucrative seven-year deal just last year, which has him tied to the club until 2030.
Mock trades have circulated since the bombshell rumours, however, none is larger than Cornes’ call for Carlton to swap Coleman Medallist McKay for Oliver.
Whilst it sounds radical, such a trade may solve the Demons’ struggles up forward, which remains as a glaring roadblock in their path for another premiership.
“There’s all sorts of clubs that should be interested in (Oliver), none more than Carlton,” Cornes told SEN Mornings.
“Shipping out Harry McKay for Clayton Oliver would be definitely something that I would do if I was the Blues.
“It solves a problem for Melbourne with their key forward stock.
“The Blues don’t really need Harry, they’ve got Charlie (Curnow), they’ve got (Marc) Pittonet, they’ve got (Tom) De Koning who is emerging as a very good player.”
Cornes also discussed the already-salivating Carlton midfield group, which would become even better with the inclusion of Oliver.
“Can you imagine the midfield at the Blues with (Patrick) Cripps and Oliver and (Sam) Walsh and (Adam) Cerra and (Ollie) Hollands – it would be frightening,” he said.
“If I was the Blues, I would be picking up the phone today and seeing whether they can ship out Harry McKay and get in Clayton Oliver.”
Both Oliver and McKay are contracted for another seven years at their respective clubs.
With the trade period kicking off next Monday, all eyes will be on the Demons to see where Oliver plays in 2024.
