Tom Morris’ trade period ladder: Ranking every club’s performance from 1 to 18

2023-10-20T08:54+11:00

Tom Morris has created a trade period ladder which ranks teams from 1 to 18 based on how successful he believes their off-season was.

While clubs can still trade draft picks in the lead-up to the draft and on the night, Morris has ranked teams purely based off how their trade period proper worked out.

Check out his ladder from 1 to 18 below.

1 – Sydney

“The Swans I've got as number one,” he said on SEN's Sportsday.

“Taylor Adams, Brodie Grundy, Joel Hamling and James Jordon.

“They've done really well to get all of them.

“The Swans are the best for me. I really rate how they’ve gone about their work.”

2 – Essendon

“Essendon, I've got at two.

“I think they had a really good off-season with Jade Gresham coming in and Xavier Duursma, but the big one is Ben McKay.

“They beat the Swans and the Hawks for Ben McKay. That's a big get.”

3 - Gold Coast

“Gold Coast did exactly what they wanted.

“They turned pick four into an array of later picks, so they can get their four Academy kids in.

“Well done to Gold Coast.”

4 - Port Adelaide

“Port Adelaide, they got two ruckmen and two defenders.

“Bang, bang. Very, very good.

“They got what they wanted. They're in the window.”

5 – Hawthorn

“Hawthorn, I've got at five.

“They did six deals on the last day. They were probably at 12 before the last day.”

6 - Western Bulldogs

“The Western Bulldogs, I've got at six.

“I like the way the Western Bulldogs have done getting up to pick four.

“That's the key for them.”

7 – Melbourne

“Melbourne, I've got at seven.”

8 – Carlton

“Carlton are eight.

“Elijah Hollands, barring what we've said before (with Thursday’s news), I think as a footballer is the right sort of guy you want to get in.

“He was a top 10 pick.”

9 - North Melbourne

“North Melbourne I've got at nine.

“The AFL gave them a lot of picks. I think they can do a lot more.

“They can be in the top eight of this list by draft night for sure.”

10 – Adelaide

“Adelaide didn't get Harrison Petty.

“They didn't get Mabior Chol. They would have liked to do more the Crows.”

11 – Collingwood

“I think Collingwood with Lachie Schultz is a good pick up.

“But losing Taylor Adams, I think is actually a bit of a loss for them. Not as much Jack Ginnivan.”

12 – Brisbane

“Brisbane and Collingwood, I have got 12 and 11.

“They've both been reasonable but not great.”

13 - St Kilda

“St Kilda are 13th, this might raise a few eyebrows.

“Liam Henry they brought in, I think they should have done more if they're going to rebuild the list.”

14 – GWS

“GWS are 14th, they were almost completely inactive.

“They went after Elliott Himmelberg, offered a late pick but didn't get him.

“I think the Giants are very settled. They didn't need a good off-season, but nevertheless, I've got them at 14.”

15 - West Coast

“West Coast so far are 15th.

“West coast can still improve a lot if they trade some draft picks.

“But I think if they went to the draft as a rebuilding club with pick one and pick 23, they would be doing a disservice to their rebuild.”

16 – Fremantle

“I think Freo’s probably lucky not to be lower here.

“They've lost players. They went after Tyler Brockman, they missed out.

“I don't think the Dockers have had a good off-season and that might not be all the list management's fault, but it hasn't worked out.”

17 – Geelong

“Geelong are 17.

“Now they will argue that they didn't want to do anymore. That’s ok, but they've got pick eight and they don't have any picks until much later and they didn't bring anyone in.

“I think the Cats have been the second worst.”

18 – Richmond

“I think the team that has performed the worst in this off-season so far is Richmond.

“I don't think they've done enough. Yes, they got a future second-rounder for Ivan Soldo.

“But I think for a team that should be regenerating on the run, they should have done more.”
