“D-grade comedy at best”: Giants CEO fires back at Collingwood’s Cox

2023-11-17T11:10+11:00

GWS Giants CEO Dave Matthews has fired back at Mason Cox in relation to a social media comment made by the Collingwood player.

Referencing the Opening Round fixture released by the AFL earlier this week, which will see GWS host the Magpies at Giants Stadium early next year, Cox took a potshot at the AFL’s youngest club.

The premiership ruck/forward tweeted: “Round 1 NRL goes to Las Vegas. AFL premiers go to … A showground for livestock”, in reference to Giants Stadium where the Sydney Royal Easter Show is held.

That comment created a bit of back and forth between Cox and the Giants’ social media team, also featuring a reference about 2023 Norm Smith Medallist Bobby Hill - a former Giants player.

Matthews was asked about the Cox comment and felt the attempt at humour by the big American didn’t quite hit the mark.

“To be honest, it’s D-grade comedy at best,” Matthews said on SEN’s The Captains Run.

“I guess that’s his thing. I guess it resonates with some people. I didn’t see it, someone showed it to me.

“I guess our players and fans are looking forward to giving him a warm welcome when he does get here, assuming he’s in the side.”

The Opening Round clash between the Giants and Pies will now have a bit of extra spice, especially after Collingwood’s one-point triumph over GWS in this year’s Preliminary Final.

Is there a new rivalry brewing in the AFL?
