Two Sydney clubs equal favourites to sign Warriors star Addin Fonua-Blake

One NZ Warriors star forward Addin Fonua-Blake will remain with the side for 2024, but beyond that, the interest in securing his signature is high across a few Sydney-based NRL clubs.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a stellar season that culminated in being named the Dally M Prop of the Year, so it was a surprise to many Warriors faithful when news broke this month of Fonua-Blake requesting an immediate release on compassionate grounds to be closer to his parents in Australia.

Speaking with Vossy and Brandy on SEN Breakfast, the Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio believes that the St. George Illawarra Dragons and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs should be considered equal favourites.

“There’s a distinct link to Phil Gould and Addin Fonua-Blake and it relates back to Gus’ time with the Warriors - he did spend a short stint involved as a consultant and basically (helped) develop the pathways system for the New Zealand Warriors during the COVID years, he has a strong relationship with the Warriors and Fonua-Blake through that time – I think that carries some weight,” Riccio said.

“The fact that the Bulldogs have cut the deal with Sio Siua Taukeiaho, they’ve let that go on the basis of a medical report, that has freed up significant salary cap space as well.

“Fonua-Blake was formerly coached by Dragons assistant coach Dean Young, and he is a former Dragon, he came through the system there with a number of clubs, South Sydney included. I think there’s still ties for Fonua-Blake to the Dragons.”

The Wests Tigers have been linked to Penrith Panthers star playmaker Jarome Luai, but they could prove to be a dark horse option at this stage for the barn-storming prop – as too could the Cronulla Sharks if they were able to get creative in finding room on their roster.

However, despite consistent rumours and speculation online of the Roosters being in contention, Riccio is adamant you can put a line through that idea.
