Who is the best key defender in the AFL?

2023-11-30T09:40+11:00

Over 50,000 votes have been counted in SEN’s 2023 AFL Fan Survey and now it is time to start unpacking the results.

We asked a number of questions relating to individual players in a bid to find out who are the best of the best in particular positions.

Team bias aside (of course), we wanted to know who you believe to be the best key defender in the AFL.

The eight nominated key defenders to choose from were made up of players who have been selected in the All-Australian squad of 44 across the last few years and who we deem to be in the top echelon.

GWS defender Sam Taylor has come out on top with 31.5% of the vote following another superb season in the orange and charcoal.

Taylor arguably would have made the 2023 All-Australian side if he had not been restricted to 15 games in the home and away season.

He is clear of Brisbane co-captain Harris Andrews who has collected 19.5% of the vote with Collingwood premiership skipper Darcy Moore third on 18.6% and Carlton’s Jacob Weitering fourth on 14.7%.

The remaining names are Melbourne’s Steven May (11.4%), St Kilda’s Callum Wilkie (1.9%), West Coast’s Tom Barrass (1.4%) and Port Adelaide’s Aliir Aliir (1%).
