Are Teddy's Origin days numbered following Maguire's appointment?

2023-12-01T10:25+11:00

Michael Maguire has been announced as the next NSW Blues State of Origin coach and has already forecast major changes to the team’s structure.

NSW have lost the last two series which increased scrutiny falling on Blues captain James Tedesco who had a poor 2023 Origin series compared to his lofty standards.

Maguire told SEN 1170 that he would pick players on form rather than incumbency which The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio believes is a clear warning to Tedesco and other ageing stars.

“Maguire is big on form, that’s what he said,” Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“It will be an intriguing discussion point as it was the last series in and around James Tedesco.

“The question will be about whether Madge (Maguire) continues down the Teddy (Tedesco) path?

“There are a couple of other guys who are starting to hit their early 30’s.

“Damien Cook, Cody Walker, Tyson Frizell, Junior Paulo and Api Koroisau. They have been mainstays and consistent contributors to the Blues jersey.

“It’ll be fascinating to see what path Maguire takes. Does he stick to his word on picking form over incumbency?

“There does come a time where the curtain closes. They’ll be massive calls.”

The NSW Rugby League board also announced new assistant coaches including John Cartwright, Matt King and Brett White who have all represented NSW.

Riccio is most fascinated by the appointment of Melbourne Storm football manager Frank Ponissi as the Blues’ Team performance manager.

“This was the biggest surprise of all if I’m being honest,” Riccio added.

“Ponissi is held in the highest of esteem as far as footy GM’s are concerned (and) it’s so pivotal for coaches to have a right-hand man.

“Maguire has a long relationship with Ponissi going back to their Melbourne Storm days.

“It adds strength, credibility and know-how for when Maguire enters the hottest seat in the game.”

The 2024 Origin series begins in Sydney on June 5.
