The lifelong fan finally at Freo and the draftee who has similarities to club captain

Jeremy Sharp realised a childhood dream when he was signed by Fremantle during the week.

The 22-year-old joined the Dockers - the club he supported as a kid - via the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) after he was delisted by Gold Coast last year.

The Dockers liked Sharp in his draft year in 2019 but the Suns were the beneficiaries, selecting him with Pick 27.

However, after four years on the Gold Coast, he has returned home to Western Australia and the club is over the moon to welcome him in.

Freo’s list boss David Walls is expecting the 23-game midfielder to take up a spot on the wing after smashing his new colleagues in all time trials last Monday.

“He’d been a Freo supporter and wanted to get to Fremantle from a young age when he was at East Fremantle,” Walls told SEN WA Breakfast.

“He just bursts with energy and he’s so driven and motivated. We were confident he’d come in and run really well. I thought he might win the time trial but not to the extent that he did.

“I know that being home and being around family and at the club he supported all the way through that he’ll give it absolutely everything. The players love him, he’s a good guy, he’s full of energy.

“He’s still got work to do in his game but we’re looking forward to him getting to know the wing role and playing a fair bit of footy for us next year.”

Another new face joining Sharp at Fremantle is draftee Ollie Murphy.

The Dockers were thrilled that the Sandringham Dragons and Vic Metro key defender slipped in the draft, allowing them to pounce with Pick 41.

Walls sees similarities between Murphy and current club captain Alex Pearce who arrived from Tasmania via the 2013 draft.

“He was Vic Metro MVP throughout the Championships as a key position player,” Walls said of Murphy.

“Not often guys slip that far that have performed that way.

“Ollie reminds me so much of Alex Pearce when he came in, in terms of that he’s 200cm, his running profile, he’s still got a lot of weight to put on. You watch him at training and he’s got a lot of work to do and needs a few summers, but I think the year got big on him too.

“It was a long season playing a lot of footy, playing at school, playing for Sandringham and in the Championships that by the end of the year and the time finals came around he was pretty tired. He wasn’t performing as well as he was in the Championships.

“So whether or not there was a recency bias towards that, I’m not sure, but we’re rapt to have him.”

The Dockers also drafted Cooper Simpson (Pick 35) and Jack Delean (Pick 60) in the National Draft while adding Oscar McDonald as a delisted free agent, Odin Jones in the Rookie Draft as well as Sharp via the SSP.
