Former All Black names NRL star that could change Wallabies’ fortunes

2023-12-14T15:41+11:00

The war between rugby league and rugby union has reignited in recent days, with the NRL close to landing three stars from its rival code.

After losing Joseph Suaalii at the start of the year, the Sydney Roosters successfully secured the services Mark Nawaqanitawase, whilst the West Tigers announced the signing of Solomon Alaimalo.

With Caleb Clarke also spotted training with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, rugby union in Australia is fighting an uphill battle to fend off interest from the NRL.

Despite Rugby Australia executives stating they will no longer pursue NRL stars, former All Black and SENZ host Stephen Donald revealed the one player that could turn the tide in the code wars.

“There’s only one, the one that I think can change the way it’s all going and happen quickly,” Donald told SEN 1170 The Run Home.

“David Fifita, he would be the one that sticks out to me like a sore thumb.

“Get him, turn him into a (Second five-eighths) in rugby which is where Sonny (Bill Williams) played, and he would be an absolute game changer for the Wallabies.”

Williams is one of the most successful cross-code stars in history, playing a combined 304 games in both sports and winning at every level of his career.

“All these other ones that they talk about throwing millions at, it doesn’t make sense to me,” Donald added.

“David Fifita would be the one that I would go all in on.”

Despite being signed with the Gold Coast Titans for the next two years, Fifita has an option to become a free agent in 2025 if he activates a clause in his deal prior to Round 10 of next season.
