Star Giant tips former No. 1 pick Cadman to have a big second season

2023-12-17T10:00+11:00

GWS star Harry Himmelberg has been working closely with developing Giants tall Aaron Cadman this pre-season.

Cadman, who was taken at pick No. 1 in the 2022 Draft, played 12 games in his debut season for the club.

After showing glimpses of his enormous potential in 2023, Himmelberg says Cadman is hungry to improve in his second AFL campaign as he ups his running capability and builds his body in the gym.

While he came into the AFL with some serious hype, Himmelberg credited the humble youngster for refusing to get caught up in the talk that surrounds early draft picks.

“Me and Aaron are pretty close,” Himmelberg told SEN Breakfast.

“We've sort of caught up a few times (this pre-season) and I guess it's hard to get a gauge off the first couple of weeks.

“But one thing I will tell you guys is he's come back in unbelievable nick, he’s stronger, he ran a PB 2k run and he’s really hungry.

“I think one thing about Aaron is he's quite humble. He doesn't get caught up in all that (talk and) sort of stuff.

“He's got the right people around him to guide him through.”

While Cadman wasn’t a best 22 lock in his first campaign, Himmelberg expects the experience he gained to be invaluable as he attacks his second pre-season.

After impressing so far over the off-season, Himmelberg is tipping the 19-year-old to have a big year.

“He's played a handful of games in his first year, which is more than certainly I can say, it's more than a lot of blokes can say for their first year,” Himmelberg said.

“That experience will be invaluable. Whether he played as well as he wanted to or not, he got those games under his belt and now he builds on his physical ability and his running.

“He’s going to go from strength to strength. He's got the skills, we've seen the skills.

“I'm really excited for a big year for Aaron, to be honest.”

Cadman will hope to win a place in GWS’ side when they host Collingwood in Opening Round at GIANTS Stadium on Saturday, March 9.
